Twitter Saga: Nigeria’s First Lady Aisha Buhari Deactivates Twitter Account

June 5, 2021 editor News, Top Stories

The First Lady has announced the deactivation on her Twitter account, following ban on the microblogging site by the Nigerian government.

In a statement on Friday, Nigeria’s communications minister Lai Mohammed announced the suspension, citing persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence as a reason for the suspension.

But in what appears a solidarity with the government, the wife of the president tweeted late night on Friday that she was deleting her account.

“I will be deactivating my twitter account for now. Long live Federal Republic of Nigeria,” she tweeted.

Mrs Buhari, who joined Twitter on February 2016, has over one million followers.

The first lady has been active on social media, promoting her activities and at times criticizing government policies.
