Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya announced on Wednesday that every secondary school in the country will be connected to the internet by the end of 2026.
To support this, the government has introduced an unlimited data package for schools priced at just 5,000 rupees ($17) per month.
In addition to internet connectivity, the government plans to equip approximately 1,500 schools with smartboards and other computer equipment.
A total of 1,900 smartboards will be distributed initially, with cabinet approval to extend smartboard provision to another 1,000 schools.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya also revealed that a national education management information system is being developed to cover all levels of education.
The Sri Lankan Air Force is providing technical assistance for this initiative as part of the Clean Sri Lanka programme
