Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has announced a N10,000 transport allowance for civil servants in the state to cushion the effect of the lingering pump price hike.
Mr Makinde made the announcement on Monday during the supervision of the YEAP-SAFER support disbursement and stakeholder engagement programme, held in partnership with the Fashola Agribusiness Hub, Oyo State.
“I’m happy to announce that all workers in Oyo State and the local governments, starting from April, at least for the first three months, will be given N10,000 additional as petrol/transportation support. It is for everybody,” Mr Makinde said.
The governor added, “This support is a direct response to the realities our workers are facing. We understand that transportation costs have gone up significantly, and as a government, we must act to ease that burden.”
The Oyo State government intervention comes amid a pump price increment from N850 to N1,300 due to surging global oil and gas prices caused by the U.S.-Israel and Iran conflict.
The crisis, ongoing since February 28, has affected oil vessel movement at the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow ocean passageway connecting the Persian Gulf to the open ocean, through which about 20 per cent of the world’s oil and gas is ferried.
