Oyo Veteran Journalists Warn Public Against ‘Phantom’ Association’s Lecture

The League of Veteran Journalists in Oyo State has warned the public against an upcoming lecture, claiming it is organized by a “phantom organization” using a similar name to deceive people.
The lecture is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, at the Millenium Hall of the NUJ Press Centre in Iyaganku, Ibadan. The league stated the event is purportedly being organized by a group calling itself the Veteran Journalists’ Association of Nigeria.
In a press release signed by league Chairman Banji Ogundele, the group clarified that it is the only recognized body of veteran journalists in Oyo State.
“This press release is necessary to prevent members of the public from being hoodwinked by elements who are purely on a self-serving mission,” Ogundele said, adding that the situation is an attempt to drag the journalism profession “into the mud.”
Established in 1988, the League of Veteran Journalists comprises media practitioners who have served for at least 25 years. Its core objectives include protecting press freedom, enforcing the profession’s code of ethics, encouraging public awareness, and promoting member welfare.
The league counts several eminent Nigerian journalists among its members, including Olusegun Osoba, Felix A. Adenaike, Bamiji Ojo, Layi Agbaje, and Tunde Akingbade, among others.
