A young boy sitting for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exams was reportedly shot dead Tuesday morning in the Alakia area of Ibadan after police officers and Oyo Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) personnel allegedly opened fire while pursuing suspected internet fraudsters, commonly known as “Yahoo boys.”
Eyewitnesses said the officers, who were said to be chasing the suspects or, according to some accounts, traffic law offenders, began shooting indiscriminately in the densely populated neighborhood.
A stray bullet struck the boy, killing him instantly.
The victim’s father, who has reportedly raised his children alone since their mother left the family seven years ago, expressed deep grief over the loss.
He described his son as a dedicated student who was preparing for his WAEC examinations.
Residents accused the officers of acting unprofessionally, leading to the tragic death.
The incident has sparked outrage and calls for an investigation into the conduct of the officers involved.
Although the video of the unfortunate incident is being circulated on social media, authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the matter as of press time.
The situation in the area remains tense, with community members demanding justice for the slain student.
