Kwara Court Orders Remand Of Alhaja Kaola In Defamation Case Against Akewugbagold

A Kwara State Magistrate Court in Ilorin has ordered the remand of Alhaja Kafilat Kaola at the Oke Kura Correctional Centre over allegations of defaming Alhaji Taofeek Akewugbagold, a prominent Islamic cleric and Wazeer Muslimeen of Oyo State.

Kaola, a Nigerian on-air presenter and Islamic figure, appeared before the court following accusations that she made defamatory statements damaging Akewugbagold’s reputation.

The specifics of the alleged defamation have not been publicly disclosed.

During the hearing, Kaola’s lawyer requested bail on self-recognition, citing her public standing.

However, the plaintiff’s counsel opposed the request, referencing her involvement in similar matters and evidence of disparaging judicial officers publicly.

The magistrate ruled to remand Kaola in custody until the next hearing, scheduled for July 17.

Akewugbagold, an Islamic cleric and former Chairman of the Oyo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, has been involved in previous controversies, including the 2020 kidnapping of his twin children, which attracted significant media attention.

The legal dispute between Kaola and Akewugbagold reflects ongoing tensions and raises broader discussions about defamation laws and the protection of reputations, particularly among public figures in Nigeria.

The case continues to unfold as the court prepares for the next session.
