JUST IN: Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Buried In Daura

Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, drawing dignitaries, family, and thousands of mourners from across the nation.

Buhari, who led Africa’s most populous nation from 2015 to 2023, died after a brief illness, according to a statement from his family. He was 82.

Mourners gathered in the ancient city of Daura to pay their final respects.

The burial followed Islamic rites and was attended by current and former government officials, local leaders, and citizens who described Buhari as a figure of integrity and discipline.

Flags flew at half-staff across the country, and the federal government declared a period of national mourning.

In a tribute, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu praised Buhari’s personal sacrifice and leadership, saying the former president would be remembered for his commitment to fighting corruption and promoting security.

Buhari, a retired major general, first came to power as a military ruler in 1983 before being overthrown two years later.

He later returned through the ballot box, winning the presidency in 2015 and again in 2019.

A father of children and a husband, Buhari’s legacy includes efforts to combat insurgency, economic reforms, and a lifelong dedication to national service.

Funeral prayers were led by prominent Islamic clerics, and security was tight as well-wishers lined the streets to witness the procession to the Daura family compound, where Buhari was interred beside his ancestors.

He is survived by his wife, Aisha, and several children.

Funeral arrangements were ongoing as tributes poured in from world leaders, including messages from the African Union, the United Nations, and leaders across West Africa.
