Arsenal, Manchester City and Premier League champions Leicester are preparing for the Champions League round of 16 as the knokcout stages of Europe’s leading club competition get under way.
The Gunners have been knocked out at this stage of the competition for the last six years in a row, and face a tough test against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich – with their fourth meeting in five years – if they are to reach to the quarter-finals.
Man City’s reward for a fine group-stage showing is a tie against Monaco, though Pep Guardiola will be wary given that the French principality club progressed at the expense of Tottenham this season as well as knocking out Arsenal at this stage two years ago.
Leicester’s title defence may be in tatters as Claudio Ranieri faces the prospect of a relegation battle, but the Foxes have been a different force in Europe this season.
Still, they will need something special if they are to get past Sevilla, who have won the Europa League for the past two seasons.
The rest of the continent’s heavyweights are all present and correct, with the likes of holders Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid all vying to reach the June 3 final at the Milennium Stadium in Wales.
