The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has died at the age of 90, just two days after celebrating his milestone birthday, officials and family members confirmed Monday.
Oba Olakulehin, who ascended the throne in July 2024, passed away in the early hours of July 7, 2025, after spending only a year as the revered monarch of Ibadan, the largest city in southwestern Nigeria.
His death comes as a shock to the people of Ibadan, who had only recently marked his coronation as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.
Born on July 5, 1935, Oba Olakulehin was installed as Olubadan on July 12, 2024, receiving his staff of office from Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
His reign followed the passing of his predecessor, Oba (Dr.) Moshood Lekan Balogun, who died in March 2024.
Oba Olakulehin was widely respected for his commitment to peace and the development of Ibadanland.
His brief reign was marked by efforts to promote unity among the diverse communities of the city and uphold the traditions of the ancient Yoruba kingdom.
The monarch’s passing has been met with an outpouring of grief and tributes from political leaders, traditional rulers, and citizens. Governor Makinde described the late Olubadan as “a symbol of royal excellence and a great achiever who made a significant impact in a short time.”
Oba Olakulehin is survived by his family and a grateful city.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Olubadan-in-Council in accordance with Ibadan’s customs and Islamic rites.
